You must have experienced that!
Your family holiday in Salzburg Country reveals many sunny highlights. Directly on the Salzburg Sun Terrace you can expect exciting destinations for young and old. Between exuberant fun and a little cosiness there is always something going on all year round. Here are some of the declared family favorites in the three sunny spots.
Seapaint Museum St. Veit
The Seelackenmuseum is best known for its exhibits from the life of Thomas Bernhard – not necessarily the big hit for kids. In fact, families will find a lot of exciting things to marvel at here. The areas of folklore, mineralogy, archaeology and mining provide exciting insights into days long gone. When visiting the Wallnerbauernhaus you will enjoy an unadulterated insight into rural life in days long gone. Rocks and minerals in curious forms stimulate the imagination. A mill tour will also inspire young and old. Directly opposite the museum there is a great children’s playground.
Who didn’t want to become a train driver sooner? In the Schwarzach Tauernbahnmuseum, this dream comes to life again, because the first railway museum in Salzburg, opened in 2003, shows restored exhibits from several decades of railway history. The museum stroll will take you to the various outdoor and indoor attractions, including a magnificently preserved steam locomotive and the impressive museum locomotive. In addition, special guided tours with train drivers from the steam train period are offered on certain days, including test drives on the locomotive simulator.
This excursion into primeval worlds is not to be missed during a family holiday in Pongau on the Salzburg sun terrace. Already in the early Bronze Age around 1850 BC, ore was mined under the most difficult conditions. During a child-friendly guided tour of the show mine, you will learn interesting things about this arduous work and about the excavations of that time. The tour leads, among other things, to a reconstructed grave of a miner and the crucible from the large mine hall. Sunnpau is suitable for children aged four and over and is open from May to October.
Kneipp plant St. Veit
The high art of water treading has a relaxing and healing effect, promotes blood circulation and supports circulation. For kids, running through the cold water with a hop on the warm grass is a huge fun. The Kneipp facility is located in the spa park of St. Veit, right next to the Maritime Museum. If the offspring is not as interested in kneading as you are – no problem at all, because next door there is a fun playground, which invites you to let off steam.
Excursions to The Salzburg Country with children
Your family holiday in Pongau also leads to neighbouring villages and districts. Around the Salzburg Sun Terrace, many small and big adventures await guests of all ages. The following destinations are within a maximum of 45 minutes by car and are therefore ideal for a small day trip.
Ghost Mountain St. Johann Alpendorf
The melted snow releases a ghostly adventure world for kids in late spring. Four adventure areas on the Ghost Mountain in St. Johann-Alpendorf await courageous three-cheese highs. Earth, fire, water and air spirits provide puzzles and high voltage. Even the little ones romp along the fun Wichtelweg, something bigger dare on air swings, the ghost tower and water games, while the big ones take care of hiking, splashing and relaxing. There is something for every age group at the Ghost Mountains.
For centuries, this world-famous st. Johann gorge has been a fascination and was opened to the general public as early as 1875. Since then, footbridges and bridges have been leading through the gorge in all weather conditions. Solid footwear is mandatory, as well as warmer and/or weatherproof clothing, depending on the season and weather. On their hike through the Liechtenstein Gorge, the rocks narrow more and more, so that the sky often remains barely recognizable, while wild masses of water rage under your feet. You have to have experienced that!
Have you always wanted to immerse yourself in the world of the Middle Ages? On the 900-year-old Hohenwerfen wehrburg, this is easy! This very popular excursion destination must not be missing during a family holiday in Pongau, because the offer for young and old can be seen in real life. With the audio guide in six languages, which is specially tailored for children, you can get great insights into the castle world. In the puzzle rally, it is important to unravel the secret of the shadow at several stations. Clever kids are rewarded with a little surprise. Medieval games, the bird of prey show and great events, such as fencing demonstrations and fairytale walks, skilfully complete the action programme.
Salt mine Hallein
Together with the clever mine duck Sally, we head into the middle of the old salt mine in Hallein am Dürrnberg. The Salt Worlds offer special guided tours for young guests between the ages of four and ten. In about 90 minutes you can walk through the mountain – good footwear and warm clothes are mandatory, because under the ground it only has about 10 °C. Sally and the mountain guides lead into secret tunnels, explain the special qualities of salt and give great insights into the world of the Celts. A visit to the salt worlds can be combined with the climbing park Anif, the Celtic Museum in Hallein or the summer toboggan run “Keltenblitz”.
This picturesque lake is located about 3.5 km west of Goldegg-Weng and is one of the most beautiful recreational areas of the Salzburg Country. Surrounded by an imposing, quite magical mountain world, the Böndlsee opens its doors to bathers in summer. Magnificent cooling and exuberant fun are on the program. But there is also a lot going on all around with its own children’s pool, sandpit, slide and seesaw for the little ones as well as enough space for volleyball, featherball and table tennis for the bigger ones. The gastronomic offer is also not neglected.
A second bathing lake in Goldegg provides a welcome relaxation on a family holiday in Pongau. The Moorsee heats up quickly to 26 °C in summer and offers fun and games with a diving tower and children’s pool. The water is especially good for skin and hair and combines swimming fun with a little wellness and relaxation. On the sunbathing lawn you can pass the world, visit the refreshment buffets in between and enjoy the wonderful shade on hot days.
