Seelackenmuseum is especially known for its exhibits about the life of Thomas Bernhard – not necessarily a big hit with kids. Yet plenty of exciting things are here for families. Areas of focus include folklore, mineralogy, archaeology and mining, and these provide really exciting insights into days long past. During a visit to the Wallner farm house you get to enjoy an unadulterated insight into agricultural life from a time long ago. Rocks and minerals in curious shapes stimulate the imagination. A guided tour of the mill inspires all ages too. There is a fantastic children’s playground directly opposite the museum.

One of the loveliest excursions for you in the Salzburger Sonnenterrasse presents the history of mining. Sunnpau is among the oldest of its kind in Salzburg. During a guided tour you learn about the history of mining which spans around 4000 years, dating from prehistoric times to the modern day. The tour features a reconstructed grave of a miner and a melting pot from the great mine hall.

24th June 1901 marked the groundbreaking ceremony for one of the most important train routes in all of Austria. The Tauernbahn links Salzburg with Carinthia, providing a touristic connection in Gasteinertal. In this museum in Schwarzach, numerous, lovingly restored exhibits from the long history of the Tauernbahn await.

The high art of water treading has a relaxing and healing effect, supporting and enhancing circulation. For kids, running through cold water then running around on the warm grass afterwards is great fun. The Kneipp facility is located in St. Veit Kurpark, right next to Seelackenmuseum. Should children not be so interested in the Kneipp concept, that is no problem at all, after all, there is a fun play area next to it where they can romp about.
Head right into the middle of Hallein Salt mine in Dürrnberg with the clever mine duck, Sally. The Salt Worlds provide special guided tours for children aged from four to ten. It takes around 90 minutes to go through the mountain – sturdy footwear and warm clothing are compulsory, since it a mere 10 °C under ground.
