The best way to explore the Pongau region is by bike. The Tauern Cycle Path and the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path pass directly through Schwarzach and St. Veit. Challenging tours between the Hochkönig and the Hohe Tauern offer stunning natural scenery and breathtaking views, with welcoming alpine huts along the way inviting you to stop and relax.
From leisurely tours for all the family, to challenging tours – Salzburger Sonnenterrasse’s mountain bike routes have something for everyone.
Between leisurely cycle excursions and really challenging mountain tours, Salzburger Sonnenterrasse and its three sunshine towns, provides a great deal of choice and variety. Incidentally it is also very suitable for E-bike riders. We have compiled a few of the loveliest road and MTB routes in the Pongau for you.
This popular cycle trail starts in Krimml in the most westerly Alpine area of Salzburger Land and finishes in the flatlands of Passau on the German-Austrian border. You don’t have to ride the whole trail at once of course, but a tour from St. Veit to Werfen is definitely worthwhile. A tour from St. Veit to Werfen on the so-called ‘Sagenhaften Tauernradweg’ (‘legendary Tauern Cycle Trail) is ideal for all the family, with the many play areas, sights and swimming pools along the route.
Explore the entire Salzburger Sonnenterrasse area by mountain bike – on just a single tour. Get started in Schwarzach, heading in an easterly direction on the Sonnenterrasse circuit. This leisurely tour which has moderate ascent (approx. 450 metres) and an easygoing 90 minutes ride time proceeds through the heart of the holiday region. Undulating terrain takes you to St. Veit, continuing to Goldegg and Weng, before heading back to Schwarzach. Even beginner MTB riders can enjoy this easy, view-packed circuit before devoting their attention to bigger challenges on their mountain bikes in Pongau.
The Watzmann-Hochkönig Circuit follows two routes over several stages, proceeding around giant Alpine mountains by the dozen. One especially attractive variant also heads via the Sonnenterrasse. The South Stage 5a leaves the original route heading for St. Veit, but should only be tackled by experienced riders. The route proceeds from Maria Alm to Dienten. Just before the town you cycle parallel to the slope, continuing into the valley. Head to St. Veit via Böndlsee, before a big mountain classification awaits. Towards Pronebenalm your calves will really start to burn. How nice then that some hearty food is already waiting for you in the Alpine lodge.
