A Winter Morning in Goldegg. The first tracks stretch across the freshly groomed trail, breath rising in small clouds into the crisp mountain air. The only sound is the steady glide of skis – until the shot rings out. Hit. A moment of pure concentration, embodying what makes biathlon so special.
Biathlon and Ernst Reiter – an inseparable pair. As an Olympic medalist and former top-level biathlete, he once raced on the world’s most prestigious courses. But this winter, he swapped fast-paced competition for the trails of Goldegg am See. Not as an athlete chasing personal bests, but as a host sharing his passion for the sport. Right at the foot of Goldegg Castle, surrounded by the snow-covered winter landscape of the Salzburger Sonnenterrasse, he made biathlon an experience for both visitors and locals – and in doing so, he created unforgettable moments of his own.
Ernst, the first season at Goldegg’s new biathlon facility is now behind you. How does it feel?
“Incredibly fulfilling! When we started in December 2024, we had high hopes that people would embrace our offering – and the response was just fantastic. From curious beginners to experienced cross-country skiers looking for a new challenge, we had it all. I couldn’t have wished for a better first season.”
Was there anything that particularly surprised you this season?
“Yes, in a very positive way! I never expected such overwhelming support from so many different sides. The tourism board, the municipality of Goldegg am See, and the local authorities made so much possible – and we also found great enthusiasm among the local community. Seeing so many people interested in biathlon was truly impressive and motivating.”
Biathlon brings people together – that was evident from the participants, right?
“Absolutely! One of the most exciting aspects was seeing where our visitors came from. We welcomed guests from all over Salzburg, but also from the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Bavaria, and other parts of Germany. Biathlon knows no borders – and that was especially felt in Goldegg. It was amazing to see how different the participants’ backgrounds were, yet they all shared the same enthusiasm for the sport.”
How did visitors react to the biathlon experience in Goldegg?
“Many were surprised at how well they managed – even without much prior experience. The combination of cross-country skiing and shooting has a unique dynamic. You push yourself through the course, your heart is racing, and then you have to instantly focus and steady yourself for the shot. Once people experience that mix of action and precision, they often come back for more.”
What was your biggest takeaway from this winter?
“I learned that biathlon is a sport that truly connects people. It was fantastic to see how strangers skied together, exchanged tips, and celebrated each other’s successes. Biathlon is more than just a sport – it’s an experience that combines nature, concentration, and community in a unique way.”
What can we expect next season? Are there any plans?
“Of course! Biathlon will definitely return to Goldegg in the 2025/26 season. The strong interest has shown us that this offering has real potential, and we’re excited to continue giving guests the chance to experience biathlon up close. The current concept has proven itself, and we’re looking forward to welcoming many more visitors to the trails next winter.
And who knows – there might even be an opportunity to kick off the new season before Christmas. We have plenty of ideas, but I won’t reveal too much just yet. Stay tuned!”
