Welcome to our blog, where we have the pleasure of speaking with Toni Huber, the charismatic master blacksmith of the ‘Rohrmoosschmiede’. In this exclusive interview, he gives us a fascinating look into the world of traditional blacksmithing, shares his passion for working with metal, and explains how he blends time-honored techniques with modern approaches in today’s world.
Toni, to start with, could you tell us a bit about yourself and the ‘Rohrmoosschmiede’?
Toni Huber:
Of course! I have been immersed in the world of metal for as long as I can remember. The moment I saw this forge, I was captivated, and in 2012, I was fortunate enough to purchase the ‘Rohrmoosschmiede’. I invested about 6,000 hours into restoring it. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by blacksmithing, so it brings me great joy to once again welcome visitors to the forge.
What makes working in a traditional smithy like ‘Rohrmoosschmiede’ so special?
Toni Huber:
The special thing about our work is the deep connection to the past. Every piece of iron we shape tells a story. We still work with fire, hammer, and anvil – just like our ancestors did. Mastering these traditional techniques while also finding new ways to be creative is what makes this craft so unique.
Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Toni Huber:
Inspiration is everywhere – in nature, history, art, and architecture. Often, it’s the little things that spark an idea, like the pattern of a leaf or the texture of an old wooden beam. But I also draw inspiration from the wishes and ideas of our customers, which constantly lead me to new creative challenges.
How do you see the relationship between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology?
Toni Huber:
I don’t see them as opposites but rather as complements. Modern technology can help us work more precisely and explore new materials. The key is to ensure that the soul of the craft – the handmade aspect – remains intact. For instance, we use CAD programs to design concepts, but in the end, it’s always the craftsmanship that gives a piece its character.
What advice would you give to someone interested in blacksmithing?
Toni Huber:
My advice is simple: just start! Find a course or a workshop where you can learn the craft from the ground up. Be patient with yourself and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Blacksmithing takes time, patience, and a lot of practice, but it’s incredibly rewarding to transform a simple piece of metal into something beautiful and functional.
What are your future plans for ‘Rohrmoosschmiede’?
Toni Huber:
We want to preserve our traditions while also making blacksmithing exciting for the next generation. That’s why we host an “Open Forge Day” every Saturday and Sunday, where visitors can experience the craft firsthand. Our goal is to keep the art of blacksmithing alive and evolving.
Finally, what does blacksmithing mean to you personally?
Toni Huber:
For me, blacksmithing is more than just a profession – it’s a way of life. It allows me to be creative, continuously improve my skills, and create something lasting. Every finished piece is a part of me, and it’s an incredible feeling to share this passion with others.
We sincerely thank Toni Huber for this insightful and inspiring interview!
